The easiest way in my opinion to incorporate herbs into a healing practise is to use herbal teas or to simply meditate with the dried herb. The Shamanic way of using plants is to journey with the plant and to meet the spirit of the plant. Shamans believe that all things have a spirit and emit a vibration. The Shamanic way of exploring the plant kingdom is personal and the plant is seen as being able to do different things for different people.
Plants have a number of healing properties and so the Shaman chooses the plant based on the clients need and what the plant communicates to them. The Shaman uses his intuition and psychic abilities and builds a deep relationship with the plant to identify the spirit of the plant. The Shaman experiences the plant rather than relying heavily on academic knowledge and books to understand the plant.
The Shamans way is about taking a personal approach to learning about the plant. Each Shaman will have their own experience of teacher plants.Shamanic Dieta describes the strict regime that some Shamans go through to understand the qualities of teacher plants. The word Dieta or Diet is the Spanish equivalent of the word apprenticeship. Some Shamans diet the plants for their whole life.
The plant dieta is a strict training and initiation into Shamanic plant medicine that is done by Amazonian Shamans in the jungle. The Shaman may fast for long periods and only ingest that particular plant for a while or have a heavily restricted diet where they focus on ingesting the plant as the basis of their diet. The Shaman in training will study each plant for a month or more. This type of training can last for many years. The regime is designed to allow the Shaman or Shaman in training to reap the benefits of the plant and to really understand it. The Shaman will also hold the dried or fresh herb and get to know it by looking at its appearance and meditating with it. The Shaman will receive downloads of knowledge about the plant in visions and dreams. To connect with a plants consciousness.
To connect with a plants consciousness you need to identify when you are receiving messages from your ego and left brain and when you are receiving messages from your right brain and intuition. Taking this further you can also receive messages from your higher self or the spiritual realm. Your ego will tend to be the nay sayer the negative voice. Your higher self will be the knowing part of yourself. The spiritual realm will offer you information that you could not possibly know but that has a deeper meaning. You may get encrypted messages that you have to unpack and the messages may take time to become clear. As a starting point you can practise tapping into these different aspects of consciousness, your own and the collective consciousness.
Relax your mind and physical body, you can do this by taking a few cleansing breaths. Focus on your breathing until you become completely relaxed. Bring the plant into your minds eye if you dont have it with you. Set an intention that you are going to connect with that particular plant and notice what information you sense, think or feel. You can ask a question that you would like an answer to, you can use this process in the form of a meditation or Shamanic journey. To get into a Shamanic state you can begin by drumming, rattling, dancing or sitting in a quiet mediatitive state. Notice if any images or words come to mind as you begin to focus on the plant. Listen to your intuition and have an open mind. Write down your experiences in a journal to refer back to. You can research the information you find later but as it is your individual experience that counts when doing it for yourself it is not necessary. The point is to connect with the plant consciousness to discover its personality and to seek answers.
The plants spirit can be different to its medicinal uses. You can practise connecting to the consciousness of crystals, herbs, essential oils, seashells, trees and places in nature to receive healing and guidance. You may find that after you have asked your question you receive information in the physical world, you might hear a snippet of a conversation confirming the answer in your meditation. You might be drawn to particular books, see something on the side of a vehicle confirming your findings or come across something in nature. You can create ceremonies or rituals to do before or after drinking or meditating with the herb. You can do a Shamanic journey with a herb or use it in your meals asking to specifically connect with the spirit of the herb. You can create teas and juices or create topical solutions.

Safety precautions and ethics*
*When using herbs and flowers do your research. Eduction is key when working with herbs. Read books and take courses to further your knowledge. Be ethical. If you are picking your own herbs get permission when it is needed. The Shamanic way is to also ask the plant if you can take it and to check in intuitively to see if you receive a yes. Do not take more plant material than you need and leave enough for the plant to continue to grow in that area. Source organic products when purchasing, where possible and take into consideration if you or your client has allergies or intolerances. Find out if a plant has a certain toxicity level and whether it interferes with medication. Research contraindications of the herbs and find out when you should not use the plant. Patch test or micro dose by ingesting a small dose of a herb before diving in*
