Imbolc a time for purification

Imbolc is a Celtic festival also known as Brigid’s Day or Candlemas celebrated around the beginning of February. Imbolc marks the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The word “Imbolc” means “in the belly,” and was used at this time of the year to describe pregnant ewes who would be ready to give birth.

Imbolc is a time of re emerging after the solitary winter months. It is a time to plant seeds and to celebrate the return of light as we move into lighter days as the sun begins to return.

As we move into February following the Imbolc tradition we can begin to cleanse and purify our environment by letting go of the things in our home that we no longer need. This time is a time to spring clean so that we can move forward with lightness. This is also a time to spring clean our lives and relationships and to plant new seeds.

Goddess Brigid is associated with Imbolc and her energy is one of healing and inspiration. Brigid is known as the Goddess of Healers, Poets and Childbirth and Inspiration. Think about what you want to birth this season. What labour of love will you spend your time doing this year? Brigid is also Goddess of Fire and Hearth. Brigid is associated with lambs and sheep and the sweet honey that bees bring. She is also associated with spring, fertility, life and protection.

During this time as we transition out of winter and into spring think about what new ideas and projects you want to plant and nurture this year. This is a time to begin the first steps to bringing your ideas and projects to fruition. This is the time to start working on the steps that you need to take to begin the project and to get your project off to a solid start. This is also a time to let your ideas germinate, to let them begin to sprout seeds of inspiration and to follow the direction of those ideas. Create a vision board to bring a physical representation into your environment of what you wish to create this year. Craft some affirmations that set your goals into the present tense and further charge your affirmations by beginning them with “I am” remember “so a man thinketh so a man is” so affirm that you have already achieved your goals and at the same time plan how you are going to actually execute your plan to really achieve your goal.

To honor this time you can work with water and fire which are both associated with imbolc and Brigid. Light a candle and as you light the candle focus on your intentions for the up and coming months. Stare into the flame and visualise a Rose in your minds eye. The Rose carries the Divine Feminine essence of Brigid who brings healing and inspiration and the promise of a new beginning. Meditate on releasing and shedding any old energy that needs to be released. You can even release anything that does not serve you into the candle flame before you visualise what you do want to call in.

Sprinkle your home with Rose water and burn Rose Petals on a charcoal disk to cleanse your home and to make room for the new. Open the window to let out any stagnant energy as you cleanse your home. You could also use Copal, Frankincense, Myrrh, White Sage or Sandalwood to cleanse your home. As alternative to Rose water you could sprinkle Flordia water at the entrance to your home and in the corners of each room. Hold the intent that the sprinkling of the water will bring purification and fresh energy into the home.

Spend some time walking in nature and look for the early signs of spring. Sprinkle some Rose Petals out on your walk as an offering to mother nature and the Earth. Bring some elements from nature into your home like a beautiful leaf or a stone that calls to you and or use some elements from nature to create and craft artwork.

Call on the Goddess Brigit to ignite the sacred flame of passion in your heart.
