Self anointing is a way to connect in with your whole self. When you take an oil that you have crafted yourself and you rub it into your body, you declare this body, this flesh is mine. You create a barrier of protection between you and the outside world. In Ayurveda Herbal oils are massaged and pressed into the skin and into Marma energy points to balance a person’s constitution, their dosha. In Ayurveda the Oils are used to bring the elements earth, air, fire, water back into balance within a person. In Shamanism when you work with the plants you connect to the spirit of the plant and to Great Spirit aswel as the earth, air, fire, water to awaken the Inner Luminous Rainbow Spirit. In Ancient Egypt the oils were used to conned tiath gods and to unlock ones own internal mastery.
When you anoint your body you experience presence, deep appreciation for your body and an opportunity to connect with your soul. To create your own anointing oil you select a dried herb that can support you with your intention, you macerate your herb transferring its therapeutic qualities to the oil and then you take that macerated oil and add essential oils to it. You can easily create your own anointing oil blend with as little as 2 essential oils, the dried herb version or a complimentary herb and a plant based carrier oil. This practice can be one that allows you to turn inward and connect with yourself. When you rub the oil into your skin you have the opportunity to connect with the spirit of the oil, the earth that the herb and plant grew in that is inside the oil, the air it breathed, the water it drank and the lineage of that plant kingdom. It can sound bat crazy but between the realms of the physical and spiritual, where you connect to plant spirits and animal guides is the place of magic, manifestation and deep realisation. Connecting with the Oils in a sacred and deliberate way allows you to turn inward to see your own soul to recognise its sacredness just as the essence of the oil is sacred. The Oils provide a window of opportunity to direct our thought and attentions to different frequencies which creates shifts and changes in the sacred temple of the body.
For centuries, priestesses, healers, and shamans have worked with sacred oils to open portals of healing, awaken spiritual gifts, and connect with divine energies. In Shamanic Aromatherapy, we go beyond fragrance—we use plant spirits, the wisdom of the Earth, and the alchemy of scent to create profound energetic shifts.
Every drop of essential oil carries the life force of the plant, holding ancient wisdom encoded in its scent. Through sacred anointing, ritual blends, and intentional healing, we can balance energy fields, clear blockages, and anchor divine presence into our daily practice.
The Spiritual Power of Scent in Shamanic Healing
Scent has the ability to transport us to other realms, awaken memories, and shift consciousness. In many spiritual traditions, sacred oils have been used to anoint the body, sanctify spaces, and invoke divine presence. From the temples of Egypt, where blue lotus and frankincense were used in sacred rites, to the mystical traditions of the Magdalene lineage, where myrrh and spikenard were used for purification and devotion, essential oils have always been a bridge between the physical and the spiritual.
Aromatherapy in a shamanic context works with intention, vibration, and energetic alignment. When an oil is chosen for healing, it is not just for its scent but for its spiritual resonance.
The Energetic Properties of Four Sacred Oils
Each essential oil carries its own frequency and healing potential. Here are four that are deeply connected to spiritual practice and divine energy:
- Spikenard – A sacred oil of deep surrender, used for spiritual purification and connecting to ancient wisdom.
- Myrrh – A protective and grounding oil, associated with devotion and higher consciousness.
- Blue Lotus – Expands consciousness, deepens meditation, and enhances dreamwork.
- Frankincense – Elevates spiritual awareness, connects to divine presence, and clears the mind.
Creating a Sacred Anointing Ritual
A shamanic aromatherapy practice is more than applying oils—it is a ritual of transformation. Here is a simple way to work with sacred oils in your healing practice:
- Set Your Intention – Before choosing an oil, ask yourself what you need. Is it heart healing, protection, clarity, or grounding?
- Choose Your Sacred Oil – Select an oil intuitively or through muscle testing and pendulum dowsing.
- Anoint with Purpose – Apply the oil to energy points, such as the third eye, heart, and wrists, or use a cotton pad placed on the chakras.
- Breathe in the Essence – Inhale deeply, allowing the scent to shift your state of consciousness.
- Enter Meditation or Energy Healing – Let the oil’s energy guide you into a healing journey.
Blending Oils for Energy Healing
Aromatherapists and priestesses create sacred blends based on the principles of top, middle, and base notes:
- Top notes (e.g., citrus, eucalyptus) – Uplifting and light, they bring clarity and awakening.
- Middle notes (e.g., floral oils like rose or jasmine) – Balancing and harmonizing, they work on the heart and emotions.
- Base notes (e.g., woods, resins) – Deeply grounding, they offer stability and connection to the Earth.
A sacred anointing oil blend could include:
- Blue Lotus (middle note) – Expands consciousness and deepens meditation.
- Frankincense (base note) – Spiritual elevation and purification.
- Eucalyptus (top note) – Clearing and revitalization.
Awakening the Priestess Within
Sacred oils are not just tools—they are guides. They carry the whispers of the divine feminine, the strength of the Earth, and the wisdom of the ancients. By incorporating them into your energy healing, rituals, and daily practice, you awaken the priestess within and step into a path of deep transformation.
