Let me begin by saying don’t be fooled by the Cider label as this herbal remedy uses Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey (ideally Manuka honey that is warmed) and no alcohol is used in the recipe. Fire Cider is a traditional drink prepared to boost the immune system and to ward off viruses and infections, colds and flu’s of the winter season.
The tradition is to prepare ingredients found locally, grown or from supermarkets to prepare a herbal remedy that will support the body during the winter season. I had heard of Fire Cider before but I didn’t really know what it was. This year I have been diving more into herbalism and along the way I was introduced to the Herbalista Free School, a voluntary organisation and school run by a herbalist who teaches in her community and online. Herbalista set up a Fire Cider Brigade and many more really great things in her local and wider community. You can take a look at her Fire Cider information here https://herbalista.org/projects/fire-cider-brigade/
So this Fire Cider is great for the colder months it contains things like black pepper and chilli which are Diaphoresis herbs and veg that cause sweating and cause energy to move out of the body great for sweating out a cold. Ginger which is antiviral and antibacterial, it uses Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother as the menstruum to extract the compounds, minerals, alkaloids and sugars out of the plant and into the vinegar. Honey is usually only used to sweeten the taste of the Fire Cider at the end and the majority of the liquid is Apple Cider Vinegar. The acid in the Apple Cider Vinegar dissolves the tannins, starch, gums out of the plant and into itself. Vinegar is alkaline in nature which helps the body to fight off infections. When using Apple Cider Vinegar place Wax paper or parchment paper on top of the jar before placing the lid on as the vinegar can corrude a metal lid. If you use Manuka honey which is raw honey you get the most anti microbial properties of the honey combined with the antiseptic properties of the Apple Cider Vinegar.
Optional ingredients for Fire Cider Vinegar:
Apple Cider Vinegar, Honey, Garlic, Onion, Ginger, Bell Pepper, Chilli Pepper, Thyme, Horse Radish, Elderberries, Lemon, Orange, Lime, Jalapeños, Tumeric Root, Black Pepper, Hawthorn Berry, Rose Hips, Hibiscus, Cinnamon.

I remembered to add the Rose Hip and Hawthorn to support heart health near the end so didn’t picture them.
The base of my Fire Cider was: Dehydrated Onions, Cloves, Dried Hibiscus, Dried Rose Hip, Dried Hawthorn Berries, Tumeric Powder, Fresh Ginger, Lemon, 4-5 peeled and sliced Garlic cloves and half a thin Chilli cut and sliced.
Chop all of the ingredients or pound, grind or smash them you want them as small as possible. I grind the black pepper into the mixture.
Place ingredients in jar from heaviest herb or plant to lightiest weighing herb in the jar. Fill the jar (1/2 – 3/4 full i.e 1.5 or 1.75) half to three thirds full. You can also use a 1:5 ratio. Using 5 lots of Apple Cider Vinegar to 1 part herb.
For fresh plant material you can use a 1:2 ratio 1 part herb to 2 parts Apple Cider Vinegar.
I like to eye ball it and just have the jar 3/4 full of herbs and plant material and then pour the Apple Cider Vinegar to near the top of the jar leaving enough space to add my honey (and Grease proof paper which is what I had) and lid.
Pour Apple Cider Vinegar over the top of ingredients and leave enough of a gap to add the honey to sweeten and to stir or shake it so everything is submerged in the liquid and well mixed together.
Macerate the mixture in a cool and dark place for 4-6 weeks then strain the mixture into a clean jar, place wax proof paper between the jar and lid, cap and store in refrigerator.
Take a teaspoon 5mls a day as a preventative measure and use to support the body when you feel the onset of cold and flu symptoms to ward off the bacteria or keep it from lingering in the body.
So the real name of the remedy for me should be “Kick Ass Flu Buster” but that’s just my opinion and of course I’m just messing around but it sums up what this powerful concoction has the potential to do. It is natural remedies at its best.
