6 weeks growing food from shop brought veg & seeds plus tips

I started with nothing and I brought a basil in a small pot, coriander, parsley and mint. The coriander keeled over and died within a week, may it rest in peace. The rest of the veg started growing brighter greener and wider so I had to change their pots by week 3. I brought some salad seeds the second week and 6 weeks later I have lettuce, dill rosemary along with every thing else. Each week when I did my shop I picked up a small spring onion, ate it during the week and then planted the bottom white part and within 7-10 days it starts to grow back. One spring onion planted could actually last you a life time. 6 weeks after planting some onions (cut in half) out of my fridge and some spring onions out the fridge my spring onions have grown so gigantic that I had to cut them down.

This is the biggest spring onion I have ever had in my life and it grew from left overs, amazing!!

I dug (picture immediately above) these up because I started thinking that they were spring onions that I planted in my onions pot. I was so shocked to see that they are spring onions growing out of the half an onion so it should produce more onions as this is what they are. At least 3-5 days a week I can now get my salad and herbs from my own garden. In the past 7 days I have planted beetroot, potatoes and tomatoes. My aim is to actually not need to spend much money on veg and be self sufficient in veg in a small space. I originally just wanted to go deeper with plants but then I've got the gardening bug now I love it. Image below of what I typically collect at meal times when I want to add spring onions, parsley, rosemary etc to my meals. I can now go outside a few steps and pick what I need.

I’ve decided to keep some in a green house when the weather is mild but cold which is how I began them. All of the herbs and vegetables are now housed in a partly sheltered area outside. I’ve doubled up on what I have now splitting things into 2 where possible so some can remain in the green house as much as possible. Braving the outdoors in the winter may take a few of the herbs out. You can grow a pot of herbs on a window indoors. I still can’t get over the fact that you can grow your scraps. I can’t believe I’ve been throwing away some thing that could actually save me money. I’m still throwing this challenge out 6 weeks later. Go on grow something its fun and rewarding.

After just 6 weeks I have plenty of herbs to use over the next month or 2. The hardy herbs Rosemary, Thyme, Sage are resilient enough to survive a winter in the UK.

  • The green house is a great way to start a green house in mild weather. As we move into winter a small green house like mine will need to come down. As a small space gardener this is where the pots become really useful. I have a dry area raised up with a cover over top which is big enough to house the herbs from the direct impact of the colder weather, frost and excessive rain.

Some of my pots have faced a battering from the wind however it gave me an opportunity to see how the roots were developing beneath the soil. The Garlic I planted a couple of weeks ago have healthy roots, the onions, spring onions, Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, Lettuce all have roots that are spreading out and growing strong and healthy.

Tips for growing herbs and Spices outdoor fast

● Choose the herbs that can grow in the environment that you currently live in. Look up which herbs grow in (insert your country) in ( insert the current season)

● Research which herbs already grow around you then get some for yourself and grow them beginning them in small containers in sheltered areas such as under garden chairs, or in herb growing boxes which are easily found online.

● Keep a vigilant look out for slugs and snails who will be eager to eat your food before you do. Remove them and place them somewhere else.
