Motherwort Leonurus cardiaca is known as “lions tail” because of its distinct leaves which have been likened to a lions tail. The name Leonorus derives from Greek words leon, meaning “lion”, and oura, meaning “tail”, referring to the shape of the flower spikes. The Cardiaca part of its latin name means “heart”. Motherwort is also known as “lion’s heart ” and “mothers herb”. Motherwort leaves and flowers are used in herbalism and it is a herb that is particularly supportive for the female reproductive system.
Motherwort has an Alkaloid component which is a key compound that supports and contributes to cardiovascular protection and uterine stimulation. Motherwort is a cooling and slightly pungent and bitter herb that is used for women at all stages of her life. It’s cooling nature means that it supports women who are experiencing hot mood swings, hot flashes, cramps and sharp pains in the lower abdomen and uterus. If I could remind you of one thing, it would be this “Think Motherwort, think heat reducing” and you’ve taken note of one of its indearing qualities that make it a go to herb for Mothers. Motherwort has been used by women in child birth to calm their fear its very name is connected to the courage and strength of the lion. Motherwort can assist with digestion and menstrual cycle cramps. Motherwort is used for the nervous system and reproductive system. Motherwort relaxes muscles and moves stagnant fluids.

In European folklore Motherwort was associated with courage and protection, sometimes it was tucked into garments or brewed into teas to support women through life transitions, especially childbirth and grief. Its cooling nature make it a great choice when looking to release excess heat and tension, particularly when emotions feel overwhelming, hence it being a go to remedy for women in the past during childbirth. In the body, Motherwort has a strong affinity for the heart—not just physically but emotionally—supporting rhythm, easing palpitations linked to anxiety, and creating a sense of grounded calm. Motherwort is a heart tonic. When you take a few sips of the tea you feel it in the heart. Motherwort creates a relaxing feeling helping to calm the nervous system. The cooling herbs like Motherwort can be used to cool activated internal systems such as a hot and painful digestive system. Motherwort has been used to tone the uterus, stimulate menses and regulate the cycle. Motherworts relaxing properties help it to ease menstrual discomfort. Colonists took Motherwort to America where it was used for hysteria and expelling the after birth during labour.
In Chinese Medicine Motherwort said to “Calm Shen” which means it calms the spirit. As a nervine it’s properties assist to cool heat connected issues such as anger and tension caused by stress. Motherwort can support the reduction of high blood pressure, as a Nervine it can relax the nerves and reduce anxiety and heart problems related to stress.
The great thing about Herbalism is that there are a number of different ways of approaching just a single herb like Motherwort. The 4 humors perspective looks at 4 main bodily fluids which are bile, blood, phlegm and black bile. The 4 humors is a philosophy in Greek Medicine. From a 4 humors perspective Motherwort can support a Sanguine type which seasonally is a spring type. Springs are people who are extrovert, they like to be out there doing something. The outward facing spring is always on the move. The typical Spring personality is over indulgent and the party type. A spring or Sanguine personality is likely to suffer from cardiovascular troubles. Sanguine type presents with heart and blood issues connected to the strain of being a mover and shaker extrovert. In the circumstances mentioned Motherwort can be usedfor muscle strain and tension and regulating the blood and blood pressure.

Motherwort can also support the Summer Choleric types or Bile related fluids in the 4 humors perspective. The Sumemr type is hot and dry so Motherwort might also be too drying for some Summer types. The Summer type suffers from hot dry conditions associated with excess heat such as swelling and high powered sports injuries such as torn ligaments and sprains and strains. The Summer type goes hard and fast and crashes out, they may be impatient and have liver associated issues and issues with anger and bitterness. Motherwort can soothe the angry and bitter heart and relax the nerves offering support to these Chloeric conditions.
In Ayurveda Motherwort would support the Pitta type which is a hot and quick moving temperament associated with the fire element and water element. Here, Pitta’s fire and water associated conditions are tempered by the cooling nature of Motherwort. Pitta associated symptoms are digestion problems, heat in the stomach, fast moving fluids like diarrhea and when out of balance Pitta will have heat related issues like excessive sweating, heart burn, anger and inflammation. Motherworts properties mean it can cool and relax some of the traits of a Pitta personality.
Motherworts astro and planetary associations are Venus and the Moon. The planet Venus is about beauty, luxury, abundance, opulence excess, comfort and love. Motherwort is the comforter with just the edge of bitterness to tell you like it is. Motherwort is the loving plump mothers arms that let you know you are home when you recieve them, these are arms that comfort you. Motherwort softly tells you that “It will be alright dear, your stronger than you think” Motherwort stirs the brave lion within. Motherwort simmers anger and rage enough to create a pause, between the pause is where you meet her Plant Spirit. Motherwort is the Divine Feminine, unapologetic, attractive and forth right with her presence, she won’t fall back she will stand tall, proud of who she has become her purple and pink flowers signal that the mysterious feminine element has arrived. The pink purple flowers and it’s association with Venus and the Moon tie it’s connections into the Feminine mysteries connected to the water, the moon, a womans intuition and psychic perceptions and her ability to charter through her emotions which are connected to water. Now you see how looking at one herb can spark many explorations into different lineages and perspectives. Motherwort is associated with the water element, it helps to get emotions flowing and moving so that they can dry out and be replaced with fresh emotions. The water element is connected to cycles of ebb and flow which supports Motherworts ability to calm choppy waters and mixed emotions.
In Shamanic Healing the connection to the plant is what is important. Shamans see all living things as having a spirit. The Shamanic approach to healing is to work with the spirit and energy of the plant. When we consider that one plant has many constituents, then we might understand the school of thought that the plants work with you on an energetic level to support you in what you need. A Shamanic approach looks to connect to the Mother Spirit of the plant and to let it do its work on you. Herbs used in Shamanic Healing are used as allies the relationship becomes more of a partnership where the books become irrelevant. A bundle of Motherwort could be used in Shamanic Healing to cleanse the aura. Someone trained in Shamanic practices can journey to meet the plant spirit and have the plant spirit carry out the energetic healing. Plant Spirit Healing is a concept I came across through the work of Pam Montgomery. Later I learned of FayJohnstone and her Plant Reiki and then Elliot Cowan these author are pioneers in bringing this type of Herbal Healing to the masses. In Plant Spirit Healing you connect to the essence and spirit of the plant you let the spirit of the plant be the guide.

Heres how to begin experiencing Plant Spirit Healing for yourself:
Practice seeing through your third eye. When you look through your third eye, focus on the area between your eye brows and bring your attention to your intuition and what you feel inside. Your intuition allows you to enter the space between worlds where you can commune with the plant spirit. To practice connecting with the plant spirit you need to get yourself into a relaxed state of mind. Carry out your own methods of relaxation before closing your eyes and visualising yourself travelling up or down a flight of stairs in an old house to an area where you meet the plant spirit. Alternatively you can visualise yourself walking towards a large field where you will meet the plant spirit for wisdom and guidance. In Plant Spirit Journey work before going into a journey you might like to call in Divine Intelligence, protection from God/ Source in a small prayer before moving to acknowledgment and gratitude to the plant itself for the things it supports and provides. To begin with gratitude you can call up feelings of gratitude through listing in your mind the things that you are greatful for. During this stage conjure up feelings of gratitude for all that you have connecting to a Higher Power/God Source. So in summary first call on a Higher Power for protection and guidance. Show gratitude. Next state your intention, this can be words that you speak in your mind or words that you physically state out loud. Next visualise yourself in the new space making your way to meet the plant spirit. Allow yourself to travel with your subtle body to a place where you can meet the plant spirit. Be open to receiving messages through your senses, sit back and allow the experience to unfold.
