Beltane Deep Dive & Self Care & Intention Setting Rituals

Beltane is celebrated on on the 1st May in the Southern Hemisphere. Beltane is a time of celebration, gathering together, enjoying good food, dancing, bonfires, love, sexuality, fertility and growth. the 1st of May marks the end of Spring. This is the time when the flowers are at their peak and blooming. The empty trees of the winter and the time of hibernation is well and truly gone as we move into Summer season with the turn of the calender. The new flowers that were planted in the spring are in full bloom.

This is a time that the ancient ancestors observed that the animals were in mating season, joining together to create new life, new animals were also being born at this time. Beltane is associated with the vibrancy of everything I just mentioned, it is also associated with maiden energy. In ancient pagan traditions Beltane was marked by bonfires which were lit by a druid at the start of the celebration. Dances would take place around the maypole. The fires lit during Beltane were symbols of purification and it was thought that the fires could ward off evil spirits. The fires also symbolised alchemy and transformation as one turned their attention towards what they wanted to create in the summer. Wild flowers and green leaves would be collected to be used as decoration in the home and the flowers would be used to create garlands for the seasonal festive celebrations.

The maypole symbolised the union of man and woman the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine. The maypole represented the man’s phallus. The maypole also symbolised fertility and was a time when the community would come together to celebrate. People would dance around the maypole holding onto ribbons that were attached to the maypole, and they would dance in and out weaving bright ribbons around the pole. This act was a symbol of the intertwining of the Masculine sky deity and the Feminine earth goddess. Couples would leap over fires and flames together at Beltane to symbolise their commitment and vows to each other. During Beltane people would sometimes dance around the fires naked and participate in sexual acts. This was traditionally a time to honor one’s sexuality and sensuality and maidens would be free to participate in sexual encounters without societal repercussions.

Beltane is associated with the Oak King a fertility god like deity who was ruler of the summer. The Oak King represents the green man or horned god. One of the old stories regarding the Oak King is that he is born at Yule and he reaches his peak at Beltane and dies at Samhain. The other side of the Oak King sometimes referred to as his brother or his other side is the Holly King who is born at mid summer, he becomes stronger as we move forward through the summer seasons and he peaks at Samhain taking the opposite journey of the Oak King. Beltane is also associated with the May Queen and the Goddess Lover.

Beltane like Samhain is a time when the veil between the physical world and spiritual world is thin. This marks a time when we can connect to the energies of nature.

During Beltane people would write their wishes on a piece of ribbon and tie it to a tree such as the Hawthorn or Ashtree in hopes that the gods would answer their wishes.

Beltane Self Care And Intention Setting Ritual Instructions:

The below ritual is especially effective around the time of Beltane but can be done at any time of the year that you feel called to do it. The ritual is designed to be a ritual that honors you, allows you to take time out for self love and self care, intention setting and connecting with nature.

Set up your sacred space with the white candle, green candle, art supplies, bouquet of flowers, and other ingredients.Begin by lighting the white candle, symbolizing purity and the light of the season. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and connect with the energy of Beltane.Take the bouquet of fresh flowers in your hands and close your eyes. Bring the energy of the flowers into your energy field by meditating on the beauty of the flowers. As you drink in the energy of the flowers visualise your intention for the summer as already being complete. Allow yourself to feel the joy that you will feel at the end of summer when you have achieved your goals. Offer gratitude to the spirits of nature for their beauty and abundance by making an offering of some of your flower petals to the earth. Take some of the petals and blow your wishes and intentions into the flowers and throw them up into the wind for your intentions to be taken up to the heavens.

Prepare a Beltane blessing bath by filling your bathtub with warm water. Add the herbs, essential oil, rose petals, and salt to the water. Stir the water clockwise with your hand, infusing it with your intentions for love, abundance, and joy. As you lay in the bath connect to your own body and thank your body for all that it does for you. As you wash your body give yourself a blessing and speak positive affirmations to yourself. Finally relax in the bath and allow yourself to dream big of what you can achieve this year. Set some stretch goals as you soak in the bath. Create stretch goals that will take you out of your comfort zone and choose goals that seem just out of your reach but not impossible.

When you come out of the bath put on some clothes or lounge wear that makes you feel beautiful and sensual. Light the green candle, symbolizing growth, abundance, and prosperity. Take a few moments to meditate on your desires for abundance and prosperity in the season ahead whilst focusing on the candles.Write down your intentions for love, abundance, and creativity on a piece of paper. Place the paper under the green candle, allowing it to infuse with the energy of the candle. Once the candle has burned out place your slip of paper with your intention into your journal or tape it to your fridge or somewhere you will see it.

Light the white candle and get yourself comfortable for some creative expression. Use your art supplies to draw on the canvas or paper, allowing your intuition to guide your creative expression. You might like to draw out your intentions or use old magazines or newspapers to create a vision board for yourself. Alternarively you might like to draw a representation of the energies of Beltane or draw one of the Goddesses associated with Beltane. As you work, visualize releasing any stagnant energy or negativity from the past season into the flames of the white candle. Visualise any doubts or fears being transmuted in the white candle flame. Feel yourself being cleansed and renewed by the purifying energy of the fire.

Finally for the last stage of your Beltane ritual write words or draw symbols onto the bay leaves that symbolise your intentions for the summer. Place your Bay leaves and cinnamon sticks into a glass jar with the honey or maple syrup. Focus on your intentions and focus on abundance as you hold the jar and infuse it with your energy and intention. Focus on manifesting your intentions and goals with ease and grace. Place the remnants of your green candle into the jar and seal it closed. Place the jar on your altar or in a safe place until your intentions become manifest. Put the artwork that you have created somewhere that you can see it everyday to keep your intentions at the forefront of your mind.

Feel free to adapt these ideas and to do all or some of them or to even create your own rituals and ceremonies to honor the energy of Beltane.
