Balm Recipe: Jasmine, Clary Sage & Sandalwood Body Balm

Lemon Balm, Jasmine Clary Sage & Sandalwood Balm (50g Tin)

Ingredients:

  • Lemon balm-infused grapeseed oil: 45 g (90%)
  • Beeswax: 5 g (10%)
  • Essential oils:
    • Jasmine: 8 drops (~2.4%)
    • Clary Sage: 4 drops (~1.2%)
    • Sandalwood: 8 drops (~2.4%)
    • Creates a 2% dilution rate suitable for the skin.

Instructions (Double Boiler Method):

  1. Prepare the Double Boiler:
    • Fill a small saucepan with a few inches of water. Place a heatproof glass bowl or smaller pan on top, ensuring it doesn’t touch the water. I use a steamer to do this. This way you can gently heat the ingredients without scorching them.
  2. Melt the Beeswax:
    • Add the beeswax to the heatproof bowl. Heat over low to medium heat until the beeswax is fully melted. Stir occasionally with a wooden or silicone spatula.
  3. Add the Lemon Balm-Infused Grapeseed Oil:
    • Once the beeswax has melted, add the lemon balm-infused grapeseed oil. Stir well to combine and ensure the mixture is evenly heated.
  4. Cool Slightly and Add Essential Oils:
    • Remove the bowl from the heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly (about 1–2 minutes, so it’s warm but not hot). Add the Clary Sage and Sandalwood essential oils and stir thoroughly to distribute the oils evenly.
  5. Pour into the Tin:
    • Pour the mixture into a clean, dry 50g tin.
  6. Cool and Solidify:
    • Let the balm cool at room temperature for several hours until it has fully hardened.
  7. Store Properly:
    • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Difference Between a Balm and a Salve

  • Balm:
    • Firmer texture due to a higher ratio of beeswax to oil.
    • Primarily used for skin protection, soothing dryness, and moisturizing.
    • No water content, making it stable and long-lasting.
  • Salve:
    • Softer consistency, often with less beeswax.
    • Can include additional medicinal herbs or extracts for healing purposes.
    • Sometimes contains extra ingredients like lanolin or liquid oils for added softness.

This recipe creates a balm due to the higher beeswax content and firm texture.
